Maybe the most famous band from my home town... Lancaster! The drummer's brother taught me maths. Their new single, Allergies is possibly their best yet. Although I'm a big fan of the earlier stop start song structures and whiny northern vocals, the latest single seems to show a whole new sense to flow and harmony that the previous songs avoided. It's really a joy to listen to! See for your self...

The Pill and Phantom Pregnancies

While us minions in our millions tumble into history's chasm
We might have a couple of laughs but we're still wastes of protoplasm
- Jeffrey Lewis

Chance encounters at the pub reminded me of the joy of finding bands which seem to have been all but forgotten. With the amount of music been made today 'below the radar' by underground acts that we love so much at Floorboard Records... It does make me wonder about what will happen to all this music. The 70s, 80s and 90s had equally thriving underground scenes... but what happened to all those bands?
I guess a lot of acts just fade away while their records start turning up in bargain bins and charity shops up and down the country... But isn’t this where indie music's myth really comes alive?

In my home town of Lancaster we have the best Oxfam Bookshop that I've ever come across (the one in Edinburgh is also great) and it was in this shop that I found two bands that have been nearly forgotten except by a few passionate bloggers. The first record was a 7" by an American band called The Pill released by Heartcore Records on pink vinyl. I actually bought this single before I had my first record player just because I love the art and the pink vinyl. The music is riotous synth pop with lyrics both rose tinted and bleak.

The second was a 7” by The Phantom Pregnancies released as a free give away with the Fear and Loathing fan-zine (issue 33)... It’s a one sided white label 7” recorded live. The Phantom Pregnacies featured members of Wat Tyler, Huggy Bear and Mambo Taxi and recorded a lot of their music straight to cassette on a boom box.  Unfortunately I have no way of capturing the songs from the record on to the computer so for now here’s a track from their record Assassination City...

So fare we have lined up:
  • Gnar Tapes from Portland, Or
  • Fluorescent Friends from Canada
  • Not Not Fun from California

We've been meaning to start a distro for years now and it's exciting that it's finally happening. If any one out there wants to send us some cassettes please email me tommie_introna (at) hotmail (dot) com.

We'll hopefully be selling the tapes at gigs and possibly at a market in London (brick lane or deptford) so look out for us! I also hope to sell them at our very own gigs which we hope to start putting on this autumn. We will be hosting The Thyme Machine on their tour promoting their new double(!) album in October... more news shortly.

And finally Bathing Blonds have their very first gig lined up at The Buffalo Bar in Islington on the 4th Oct as part of the weekly Club Fandango. So hopefully see you there!

Watch out for some actual releases soon !

Best,
Tommie

Floorboard Records were started sometime last decade to release the imaginary bands of Tommie and Ryan. In 2011 Floorboard Radio began broadcasting through Goldsmiths Wired Radio... we don't do the radio anymore, but the Label lives on and the Distro is being set up...
